Weather in St. Petersburg, Russia in different seasons

St. Petersburg weather and climate

Choosing the right time of the year and considering the weather is important when planning a trip to any country, but it is, of course, absolutely crucial if you want to visit Russia. If you’ve never been to this country, you might be imagining extreme temperatures, huge piles of snow and bears lurking in the corners of the streets at night, but don’t worry. Unless you’re going to very remote parts of the country like Siberia, the weather is very much bearable even in winter.

Since St. Petersburg is located close to large bodies of water, the temperatures here are pretty mild compared to other parts of the country. In winter the temperature rarely gets below 10 degrees Celsius and in summer it almost never exceeds 30 degrees. However, humidity in the city is very high and can cause a lot of problems for unprepared tourists.

When choosing the best time to visit St. Petersburg you should also consider the calendar of events and attraction closings. For instance, you might think that summer is the best time to visit the city but if you hope to attend a ballet at the Mariinsky Theater during your trip, you might be out of luck, as the theater is closed for two months every summer.

Winter weather in St. Petersburg, Russia

Even though winters in St. Petersburg can be quite cold, many consider this season to be the best time for visiting St. Petersburg if you really want to get to know this city. The streets look gorgeous with all the snow decorating the streets and there are lots of events going on. There are two main celebration periods in winter: the first one happens between New Year and January 13th (Christmas in Russia is celebrated on January 7th), there are lots of celebrations around town but many museums and art galleries may be closed during this time. The other major holiday happens one week before lent - Maslyanitsa, a pancake celebration.

In winter, the weather outside is cold, windy and humid, so make sure to bring lots of warm, waterproof clothing.

Summer in St. Petersburg

Summer is the most popular time for visiting the city, so you should expect to see large crowds of tourists. Tours, tickets and hotels need to be booked well before you actually come to the city. If you visit between the end of May and the middle of July, you will get a chance to enjoy legendary White Nights, as well as many events and festivals dedicated to them.

Spring in St. Petersburg

Spring is the perfect time to visit St. Petersburg if you want to avoid both the cold weather and large crowds of tourists, but you should keep in mind that warm weather only comes to the city at the End of March. May 1 and May 9 are large state holidays and people don’t work on these days and most days between these two holidays, in fact. It is a time of celebration and you can witness many Soviet-style parades in the city during this week-long celebration.

Fall weather in St. Petersburg, Russia

Fall in St. Petersburg is quite short and wintry weather sets in by the middle of October. However, September can be a beautiful time for visiting the city, as the leaves change and make magnificent old buildings look even better. You can also catch lots of theater premiers and gallery exhibit openings in this month as the city’s cultural life ramps up after the summer break.
