Summer is the best season to visit Saint Petersburg. Of course, that is mostly because of its warm weather and traditional vacation-time of people from all over the world. But there is also one significant reason to come to northern capital of Russia in that period – incredible white nights which cover the city since the end of May till August.
White nights are a very beautiful natural phenomenon, when nights become almost as light as days. During this period of time the sun goes beyond the horizon only at 9 degrees and the sky is getting beautiful pearlescent shade. All the citizens and guests of Saint Petersburg try to spend more time walking in a fresh air and searching for places, where they can catch the most magnificent view to admire.
So, today we want to discuss, where in Saint Petersburg is the best view on the city under the pearl sky of white nights.
The Colonnade of St. Isaac’s Cathedral
St. Isaac’s Cathedral is an outstanding monument, the greatest Orthodox Church of Saint-Petersburg. It was rebuilt 4 times! Yes, you already know about the history of it, but let us refresh some memories. The first wooden church was built in 1707 by decree of Peter the Great in the name of his patron - St. Isaac Dalmatskiy. Later in 1712 there held a public wedding of Peter I and Catherine, the future Empress Catherine I. The second time it was erected of stone by German architect G.J. Mattarnovi. The next time it was restructured during the reign of Empress Catherine II, but while the building didn’t match the appearance of the city, Emperor Alexander I decided to reconstruct it in the most impressive Cathedral in Russia. He entrusted it to the young French architect Auguste Montferrand and exactly his project we see today.
The Colonnade of St. Isaac’s Cathedral is still the highest point of the historical center of Saint Petersburg. From the height of it you can see beautiful panorama with the greatest monuments of the city: Peter and Paul Fortress on the Hare Island, Neva river, Hermitage, ex-residence of Russians tsars and Empresses, Admiralty, Church of the Savior on blood, Kazan Cathedral.
In summer the Colonnade is open for visitors till 10 pm, and in period of white nights it open almost all day long (till 4:30 am), which makes it a perfect place to see sunsets and sunrises! Remember, that on Wednesdays it is always closed.
Palace embankment is the favorite place of citizens and guests to watch white nights. That is because in summer all the bridges that connect two sides of Neva river are divorcing, and the pearl sky makes that moment very special. Locals try to spend more time walking alongside or sitting on the bench enjoying the night view of their beloved city. Many newlyweds come here to capture their happy moment and make a photo with lightened bridges on a stunning sky on the background.
From the Palace embankment you will see Peter and Paul Fortress, Hermitage, cupola of Saint Petersburg Mosque and other beautiful buildings.
Across the Moyka river there are 4 bright bridges, which attract the attention of all tourists: they are green, red, blue and yellow (now it changed to Pevcheskiy bridge). But their story is very simple! Due to similarity and close proximity to each other people were confused and they decided to paint them into radically different colors.
Every bridge opens beautiful view on historical buildings of the city, but especially we recommend you to come to the Blue bridge during white nights. Here you can spend your time with pleasure looking at outstanding St. Isaak Cathedral and its square, a monument to Nikolas I and Mariinskiy palace.
