In the 1960s this center was opened as a part of the Soviet Space program, which was at its peak during the Cold War. The Star City is located near Moscow, 25 km to the east by car or train to be precise. Many Soviet Cosmonauts made this journey every day and many of them still live in Star city with their families to prepare to go to space one day.
Not so long ago, Star City opened its doors for regular people. A lot of tourists come here every year. Only here you can learn more about the Russian space program and find out a lot about many famous people who lived and worked here. You don’t have to be an astronomy geek to love this place. It’s very educational and fun for everyone. Ever wondered how to become an astronaut? Or how they survive onboard in space? Welcome to Star City, they will love to answer all your questions there. Prepare to be overwhelmed, in a good sense.
Star City gives you two itinerary options to choose: the shorter or the longer one.
Option 1 - a short tour of Star City in MoscowThe shorter tour is about 6-7 hours long, only 2-3 hours of which you will spend in Star City itself. As it’s 25 kilometers drive away from Moscow, they will also provide you with a hotel pick-up and drop off as part of the tour.
During the tour, you will be able to see (from the outside) the Russian spacecraft "Soyuz", “MIR” space station, the model of ISS (International Space Station), which is actually still in use today. After that, you will take a picture of the monument to Yuri Gagarin as a part of the tradition.
Option 2 - a long tour of Star City, RussiaAs part of an extended tour, you will visit all the places and objects of the shorter tour first. Then you will also see a gigantic centrifuge designed to simulate G-force, walk around the living area of Russian cosmonauts and listen to the stories about their everyday life. You will get to have lunch in a local, stylized “Cosmos” cafe. The extended tour lasts a little bit longer, about 8-9 hours long, only 4 hours of which you will spend in Star City itself. You will also be picked up and dropped off at your hotel as part of the tour. If you choose so, your tour may also include seeing spacecraft "Soyuz" or “MIR” space station from inside. It is also possible to request taking part in the Hydro-laboratory training to try the feel of no gravity.
Visiting Star CityIf you are eager to visit Star City it is in your responsibility to plan the trip in advance. This visit unlike many others can’t be a spontaneous decision.
