The Palace square
The most beautiful square in Russia and one of the most amazing squares in the world, Palace square is famous all around the world. Right now, if you ask Russian citizen in general about the most famous square in Russia he’ll answer you “The Red one”. Well, one hundred year before it was different – everybody would answer “The palace square”. Time changed but the square is still the most beautiful, huge and harmonious one in Russia with beautiful architectural ensemble built around it by genius architects of Russia.
In the beginning this square was a simple field for farm animals to feed on and people to place their building materials. As the city grew in the 18 century the square finally started to serve its original purpose and transformed into beautiful circle square with Winter Palace built near it.
Nowadays almost all important city events are held on this square. Winter palace also became a home of the world’s famous museum Hermitage.
Admiralty situated on Neva river embankment is a symbol of Saint-Petersburg and architectural jewel of Russian Empire design and style. Peter the Great created the schemes of this place himself in 1702 and wished for this place to become the main point responsible for ship building in Russia on Baltic Sea.
The famous tower with ship on top of its spire was built in 1711. Under the ship you can see the sphere with golden coins.
Catholic church of St. Catherine
This church is one of the oldest catholic cathedrals in Russia. Built in 1736 under the patronage of the Empress of Russia, this church is tightly connected to different famous Russians. Here lays the builder of St. Isaac cathedral, the last king of Poland and etc.
Under the soviet regime the church suffered great damage but was fully restored later. Right now it is working every day. While going inside you can listen to beautiful messes and explore the unique interiors. During Christmas here you can enjoy the most wonderful holy celebration.
Art center “Perinnye ryady”
Located in the very center of St. Petersburg, it welcomes you into the world of world-known art and works of such famous artists as Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Marc Shagal, etc.
This place has an interesting mission. It was created for new auditory of people, so common right now in the cultural capital of Russia. This gallery was opened for those who go into art galleries and museums not because there are obliged to, but because they want to. Every exhibition is carefully created with individual approach to every detail. Every year you can find something truly beautiful and mesmerizing here. For example, there were exhibition of Renoir, Sezanne, Warhol and Kandinsky works.
In the very heart of St. Petersburg one of the biggest buildings in historical St. Petersburg is placed. Kazan cathedral goes up for 72 meters.
In the beginning of 18 century Kazan cathedral appeared on Nevsky street for the first time. Then it wasn’t huge – small wooden church was replaced by stone one. Later this church was named Kazan because there was icon of Kazan Mother of God delivered and placed. Much later the building was reconstructed into the enormous and grandiose cathedral you can see nowadays. Its architect was honored the prestigious award for this project.
During the Soviet time the museum of religion was placed in the interiors of the cathedral. Later, it restarted its services. Renovation of this place is in progress even nowadays, but you can walk around its beautiful columns and statues to enjoy the beauty of Northern capital of Russia.
Six-floored building with a mansard in art noveau style was built in 1904 for the Singer Company and took it as a name. In the beginning the architect was planning to build it in the New-York skyscraper style, but the idea transformed into something new due to restriction of height of buildings in the city center.
Right now in the beautiful interiors of this house the biggest city bookstore is placed.
The Big Shopping Arcade
The biggest store in Saint-Petersburg, European Russia and Scandinavia is situated on Nevsky street. The name ‘shopping arcade’ came from old times when all big stores were called such way. It was built under the Rastrelli’s project with the benediction of Empress Elizaveta. After the World War 2 the place was renovated. Right now it’s not only a compilation of stores; here you can find cafes, art galleries and much more to entertain the public.
Stroganov Palace (The Russian Museum)
One of the famous buildings in Russian baroque style, this palace was built in two years period! In amazing and rich interiors of this palace you can find one of the most interesting museums of the city – the Russian museum where the works of such artists as Rembrandt and Botticelli are displayed.
Anichkov palace is one of the most beautiful palaces of Saint-Petersburg. It was built near the Anichkov Bridge in the end of 18 century in Baroque style. Meant to held international events and conferences this project was given to well-known architect Rastrelli.
Later the style of the palace was transformed into a strict classic one. Nowadays, different companies for additional education for children are placed in these historical interiors.
